Quest for Kim

Fascinated since childhood by Kim -- that strange tale of an orphan boy's recruitment into the Indian secret service -- Peter Hopkirk, renowned author of The Great Game, here sets out on an intriguing journey across India and Pakistan to unlock the many mysteries surrounding Kipling's great novel. As he travels, Hopkirk's detective work reveals that most of Kim's characters were inspired in whole or in part by actual individuals. Likewise its locations are real -- all of them familiar to the young Kipling. Mark Twain was one of the many captivated by Kim. He resolved to read it every year and made the journey to India to qualify myself to read Kim understandingly and to realize how great a book it is. Hopkirk carefully sketches in Kipling's narrative so that it is not essential to have read Kim in order to enjoy this book. It is both a travel adventure and a literary detective story.

Shiloh

Set in the hills of rural West Virginia, this is the story of 11-year-old Marty Preston and the dog he sets out to rescue from its abusive owner. Although Marty knows better than to do battle with the foul-tempered Judd Travers, he is unable to stop himself when he discovers that the gentle but frightened beagle he found roaming in the woods has run away from Judd. Although Marty initially returns the dog, he is unable to do so when the dog escapes from him a second time and returns to Marty's gentle care. Knowing that his parents will send the dog right back, Marty builds a pen for his new pet, whom he names Shiloh, and secretly cares for him--hoping, in the meantime, to raise enough money to buy the dog from Judd. However, caring for Shiloh means lying to his friends and family, a situation that causes Marty great pain. A study of human nature, sacrifice, ethics, and the eternal bond between boy and dog, SHILOH won the 1992 Newbery Medal.

Bug (DVD)

Bug begins, appropriately enough, with a young boy squashing a cockroach on the sidewalk, an act that sets into motion a number of other, larger catastrophes. Looking on is Wallace (Carroll Lynch), who berates the boy for taking an innocent life, thus beginning a series of bizarre coincidences that affect the lives of a group of strangers living in LA. Whimsical and surreal, BUG is an imaginative directorial debut from screenwriters Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL).
